In this article we will formulate a San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs prediction for this MLB game on Monday, May 6th at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. To formulate this prediction for game one in the series, we will examine:

Padres are Swinging Hot Bats

The San Diego Padres are 18-19 this year and they have won four of their last five games. San Diego is coming off of a series win against Arizona, where they won two out of three and scored 24 runs in the series. Prior to that series, the Padres won two out of three against Cincinnati and were swept by the Phillies in three games. San Diego is under .500 on the season, but they are second in the NL West, 5.5 games behind the Dodgers.

The San Diego pitching staff has a 4.28 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a .241 opponent batting average. The Padres offense has scored 187 runs with a .259 batting average and a .325 on base percentage. Jurickson Profar is batting .344 with five home runs and 23 RBI’s for the Padres this year. San Diego is second in the MLB in runs scored this year and they have scored at least six runs in four of their last five games.

Cubs are Gaining Momentum

The Chicago Cubs are 21-14 this season and they have won three of their last five games. Chicago is coming off of a series win against Milwaukee, where they won two out of three games and shutout the Brewers on Sunday. Prior to that series, the Cubs split a four game series with the Mets and lost two out of three against Boston. Chicago is coming off of a huge series win against Milwaukee over the weekend and they are now tied for first in the NL Central.

The Chicago pitching staff has a 3.75 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a .233 opponent batting average. The Cubs offense has scored 168 runs with a .237 batting average and a .318 on base percentage. Michael Busch is batting .261 with six home runs and 18 RBI’s for the Cubs this season. Chicago has played inconsistently over their last nine games, but they have scored five runs or more in three of their last four games.

Starting Pitchers

The projected starting pitcher for San Diego is Yu Darvish, who is 1-1 with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 28.2 innings pitched this year. Darvish has allowed at least three earned runs in three of his last four outings, but did throw 5.0 shutout innings against the Reds last time out. The projected starting pitcher for Chicago is Justin Steele, who is 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP over 4.2 innings pitched this season. Steele went 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run against Texas in his first start of the season, before going on the IL.

San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs Prediction

Chicago comes into this game after a huge series win over Milwaukee and they are 12-4 at home, while San Diego had a nice series win against Arizona and is 10-7 on the road. Both of these offenses have been pretty good this season, but there are a few questions about the pitching matchup. Yu Darvish hasn’t been great recently and Justin Steele is coming off of a lengthy stay on the IL, so he is an unknown coming into this game. I think both offenses can continue to find success in this matchup and my San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs prediction is for this game to go over the total.
