Joao Fonseca and Fabian Marozsan meet in the first round of the 2025 Italian Open Rome on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Here’s our Joao Fonseca vs Fabian Marozsan prediction. This preview will also include a Joao Fonseca vs Fabian Marozsan pick.

Joao Fonseca Preview

Joao Fonseca is ranked 65th in the ATP rankings, which is six spots below his career high. Fonseca will compete in Rome for the first time, but he’s had experience at the ATP 1000 level already this year, playing in Indian Wells, Miami and most recently in Madrid. His best result at this level was a third-round finish in Miami. Before that, he had won the Phoenix Challenger after an early exit in Indian Wells. It was his second title of the season on the ATP’s second tier, having bagged the Canberra 2 Challenger in January.

Fonseca has compiled an impressive 23-7 record for the season. This is his first fulls season on the ATP Tour after turning pro last year. He’s captured a maiden Tour level title on the clay courts of Buenos Aires in February, but he’s not had similar success on the European clay so far, with one win and two defeats from two tournaments.

Fabian Marozsan Preview

Fabian Marozsan is ranked 61st in the ATP rankings, although he has previously been ranked as high as 36th. Marozsan will play in his third main draw at the Italian Open. He made the round of 16 as a qualifier on his debut appearance in 2023, stunning Carlos Alcaraz en route. Last year, he was knocked out in the first round by Alexander Shevchenko.

Marozsan has posted a 5-3 record on clay this season, with his campaign starting in Monte Carlo, where he successfully qualified for the main draw but lost to Gael Monfils in three sets in the opening round. His second tournament was better. Marozsan scored a top 30 scalp against Ugo Humbert on his way to the Munich 500 semifinals. There, he lost to eventual champion Alexander Zverev. Two weeks ago, he lost his opening match in Madrid to Flavio Cobolli.

Joao Fonseca vs Fabian Marozsan Head-To-Head

Fonseca and Marozsan have no previous history. This will be their first meeting.

Joao Fonseca vs Fabian Marozsan Prediction

Fonseca’s European clay-court adventure has been largely underwhelming so far, with two early defeats in Madrid and at the Estoril Challenger. But that doesn’t stain what is already a fantastic start to the year, with the 18-year-old exceeding expectations in his first full season. And the bookies are clearly treating his recent form as a minor blip. Marozsan, for all his experience of knack of defying the odds, is broadly inconsistent. He doesn’t quite strike us as a profitable pick in this match. We’re looking at a strong start from Fonseca on his Rome debut.

Nur Said's Pick: Joao Fonseca in straight sets
